It seems like Blizzard’s plans for Overwatch, the insanely popular hero shooter is not only going to have an expanding array of heroes, maps and game modes in the future, but also a huge line of comic books, artwork and more in order to cement the game into a full-blown franchise.
According to their press release, Dark Horse has already begun republishing a series of free digital comics by Blizzard Entertainment that further illuminate the characters and world of Overwatch. A number of eight-page digital comics are already available through Dark Horse’s digital comics platforms, with more currently in production and slated for release in the future.
In 2017, however, they plan to release their first hard cover issue of Overwatch which features the original overwatch strike team include Jack Morrison and Blackwatch Reyes in their humble begins before the team broke up and overwatch goes under.
Now, I’ve been playing this game on and off for the past several weeks now, and I have to say that this is the possible one of the best directions to keep going forward with lore and storytelling for the game. At first, I was kind of disappointed with how the game included no traditonal single-player story campaign, but after seeing all Blizzard’s attempts at storytelling through the digital comic books, hidden messages within their update videos and the mysterious sound files tucked away directly within the game files, it makes me even more excited to learn about the game world than a singleplayer campaign ever could.
I honestly hope that they continue down this path and keep the mysteries come, because I’m incredibly invested in the world of Overwatch at this point.
Also to note: Summer 2017 will see the release of The Art of Overwatch, a stunning collection of never-before-seen concept art from the critically acclaimed game.
